It’s all about the (K) drama

Son Ye-jin as Se Ri and Hyun Bin as Captain Ri. Se Ri is asleep, her head on Captain Ri's shoulder, as he stares down into an open fire (off screen). She has his military great coat draped over her shoulders and her hair is draped over his.

It’s been quite the year emotionally and physically, with ups and downs I’d anticipated and a fair few I hadn’t.

One of the ups, was the discovery of K Drama, thanks to my clever friend Emma Grey (author of Pictures of You and The Last Love Note), who insisted I watch a show called Crash Landing on You.

I wasn’t too sure, but after a few days stuck in bed with migraine and bored with my own company, I pulled out my trusty laptop and opened Netflix.

Instantly caught up in the drama that spans genres and North and South Korea, I was hooked.

From a writing perspective, there is much to learn about this show and the Korean approach to popular storytelling. The story is rich and full (16 episodes with a minimum runtime of one hour), with deeply nuanced characterisation, believable internal and external conflict, and a rising tension that sustains the series.

From a viewer’s perspective, it is an absolute delight. There’s romance, action, adventure, thriller, family drama and geopolitical tension. An astonishing feast for the eyes and ears!

I’ve gone on to watch many, many other K Dramas. I have some firm favourites, by my first love will always be CLOY.
